the name sometimes given to the depression, a locus saeptus, between the Capitolium and the Arx, where Romulus is said to have established the asylum, and where the temple of Veiovis was erected (Vitr. iv. 8. 4; Liv. i. 8. 5; Dionys. ii. 15 ; CIL i². p. 233; Veil. i. 8. 5). It seems to have been quite an open area in Cicero's time (de Div. ii. 40). Twice only one lucus is spoken of as the site of the asylum (Flor. i. I. 9; Schol. Iuv. viii. 273 ; cf. BC 1905, 211-214).
