γλαυκῶπις. The description of Athena as the war-goddess Il.1. 200“δεινὼ δέ οἱ ὄσσε φάανθεν” is parallel to this epithet. The notion contained in it is not that of colour but of brightness and flashing splendour. So Schol. on Apoll. Rhod. 1. 1280 “διαγλαύσσουσιν ἀντὶ τοῦ φωτίζουσι ἢ διαλάμπουσι, ὅθεν καὶ ἡ Ἀθηνᾶ γλαυκῶπις, καὶ γλήνη ἡ κόρη τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ, παρὰ τὸ γλαύσσειν ὅ ἐστι λάμπειν. καὶ Εὐριπίδης ἐπὶ τῆς σελήνης ἐχρήσατο γλαυκῶπίς τε στρέφεται μήνη”.
