[404] ἐν σπήεσσι πελάσσατε. La Roche adopts the reading “σπήεσσι” without the preposition, on the ground that “πελάζω” is joined in Homer with the simple dative, which is indeed true, if we except “οὖδάσδε πελάζειν Od.10. 440, and Od.7. 254.But the common reading seems required here by the sense, ‘bring them to—and stow them in—the grottos;’ the whole expression being a similar construction to “ἐς θρόνους ἵζεσθαι”. The phrase is illustrated by h. Hom. Merc. 523μηδέ ποτ᾽ ἐμπελάσειν πυκινῷ δόμῳ”.

ὅπλα are the movable parts of the ship's tackling.
