[351] ἐν ποταμῶι, at the river, is best taken with “στῆσαν:18.521, Od. 14.258. Presumably they cross the river at the ford, cf. 692, 14.433 (note). γάρ explains that they reach the river at a suitable moment for crossing into the enemy's lines.
