ἀρόω [α^], pres. inf.
A.“ἀρώμεναι” Hes.Op.22: fut. “ἀρόσω” AP9.740 (Gem.), -ώσω or -όσσω ib.7.175 (Antiphil.): aor. “ἤροσα” Hes.Op.485, Pi.N.10.26, S.OT1497, etc. (“α?ροσε” Call.Cer.137), Ep. inf. “ἀρόσσαι” A.R.3.497:—Pass., pres. “ἀροῦται” Din.1.24: aor. “ἠρόθην” A.Supp.1007, S.OT1485: Ion. pf. part. “ἀρηρομένος” Il.18.548, Hdt.4.97:—plough, till, “οὔτε φυτεύουσιν . . οὔτ᾽ ἀρόωσιν” Od.9.108: metaph. of poets, Μοίσαισιν ἔδωκ᾽ ἀρόσαι gave them work to do (cf. ἀρότης), Pi.N.10.26; “πόντος . . ἠρόθη δορί” A. l. c.
II. sow, “ἀροῦν εἰς Ἀδώνιδος κήπους” Pl. Phdr.276b:—metaph. in Pass., “ἐν Διὸς κήποις ἀροῦσθαι . . ὄλβους” S.Fr. 320.
2. metaph. of the man, “ἀλλοτρίην ἄρουραν ἀροῦν” Thgn.582; “τὴν τεκοῦσαν ἤροσεν” S.OT1497; of the mother, IG7.581.1 (Tanagra): —Pass., of the child, “ἔνθεν αὐτὸς ἠρόθην” was begotten, S.OT1485. (Root ἀρο-, cf. Lat. arāre, Goth. arjan, Lith. árti, etc., 'plough'.)
