φροῦδος , η, ον, also ος, ον S.El.807, E.IT154 (lyr.), Plu.2.263a: (contr. from πρὸ ὁδοῦ, as φροίμιον from προοίμιον, φρουρός from Προορός): —
A.gone away, clean gone (as Hom. says in full, οἱ δ᾽ ᾤχοντο ἰδὲ πρὸ ὁδοῦ ἐγένοντο, Il.4.382):
1. of persons, gone, fled, departed,φ. ἐστιS.Ant.15, etc.; φ. ἐξ οἴκων, δόμων ἄπο, E.Alc.94 (lyr.), Andr.73; “σκηνὰς ἐς ἱεράςId.Ion804; “βεβᾶσι φ.Id.IT1289; “οἴχεται φ.Ar.Ach.210 (lyr.); c. part., φροῦδοί [εἰσι] διώκοντές σε they are gone in pursuit, S.Ph.561; “φ. ἀναρπασθείςId.El.848 (lyr.); “φ. ἐξῳκισμένοιAr.Pax197; “φ. πλέωνAntipho 5.29; also of the dead, “φ. αὐτὸς εἶ θανώνS.El.1152; “Ἀντίλοχος αὐτῷ φ.Id.Ph.425, cf. b. undone, ruined, ib.722, Heracl.703 (anap.), Or. 390.

Ar.Nu.718 (anap.).—Rarely found in any case but nom. sg. and pl.: gen. sg. once in S., Aj.264.—Trag. word, once in Antipho l.c.; freq. in later Prose, as Luc.Merc.Cond.24, Aristid. 1.161J.: acc. is found in Plu.Pyrrh.31, 2.405f.
