A.“ἤνασσον” Od.11.276, Dor. ἄνασσον [α_] Pi.O.6.34, Ep. ἄνασσον [α^] Il.1.252, Aeol. 3sg. “ἐάνασσε” Alc.64: fut. “ἀνάξω” Il.20.180: Ep. aor. “ἄναξα” Hes.Th.837:—rare in Med. and Pass., v. infr.: (ϝανάσσω, cf. ἄναξ):—poet. Verb, mostly pres., to be lord, master, of gods and human rulers: in Hom. mostly c. dat., “νήσοισι καὶ Ἄργεϊ” to be lord, hold sway in . ., Il.2.108; κτήμασι, κτεάτεσσι, Od.1.117, 4.93: also c. gen., “Ἀργείων, πεδίοιο ἀ.” to be lord of . ., Il.10.33, Od.4.602, cf. Pi. l.c., E.Andr.22, etc.: with dat. pers. added, ἐλπόμενον Τρώεσσι ἀνάξειν . . τιμῆς τῆς Πριάμου to be master of Priam's sovereignty among the Trojans, Il.20.180; “γῆς ἀνάσσει βαρβάροισι βάρβαρος” E.IT31; “πάντων μὲν κρατέειν ἐθέλειν, πάντεσσι δ᾽ ἀνάσσειν, πᾶσι δὲ σημαίνειν” Il.1.288: with Prep., μετ᾽ ἀθανάτοισι ib.4.61, cf. 23.471; “ἐν Βονδείῳ” 16.572; “ἐν Φαίηξι” Od.7.62; “παρὰ τὸν Ἀχέροντα” S.El.184; ὑπὸ γαίας ib.841: with neut. Adj., “Ζεῦ πάντ᾽ ἀνάσσων” Id.OT904: in Hom. freq. with “ἶφι, Τενέδοιό τε ἶφι ἀνάσσεις” Il.1.38, al.: abs., “τῶν ἀνασσόντων” the kings, S.Ph.6:—Med. once in Hom., τρὶς ἀνάξασθαι γένε᾽ ἀνδρῶν to have been king for three generations, Od.3.245:—Pass., to be ruled, “ἀνάσσονται δ᾽ ἐμοὶ αὐτῷ” 4.177.
II. in Trag. sts. metaph. of things, “κώπης ἀνάσσων” E.Fr.705; “ὄχων ἀνάσσουσ᾽” Hel.1040; “στρατηγίας” IT17; πηδήματος ἀνάσσων lord of the leap, dub. in A.Pers.96; ἃ τῶν νυκτιπόλων ἐφόδων ἀνάσσεις, of Persephone, E.Ion1049 (lyr.):—Pass., “παρ᾽ ὅτῳ σκῆπτρον ἀνάσσεται” is held as lord, S.Ph.140 (lyr.).
