A.dry up, wither, κάρψω μὲν Χρόα καλόν will wither the fair skin, wrinkle it, Od.13.398, cf. 430; “ἠέλιος Χρόα κάρφειHes. Op.575:—and in Pass., [Χρὼς] “κάρφεται ἤδηArchil.100; “πυρὶ καρφόμεναEuph.50; “περὶ Χροῒ καρφομένη θρίξNic.Th.328.
2. metaph., ἀγήνορα κάρφει Ζεύς Zeus withers the proud of heart, Hes.Op.7; “κάματοι κάρφοντες γυῖαNic.Al.383:—Pass., “οἴτῳ κάρφεσθαιA.R.4.1094; v. κάρφος.
