ὑπερτίθημι ,
I. the literal senses only in late writers,
1. set higher, erect,βωμόνIG14.1020 (Rome).
2. set on the other side, carry over,τὸ ἄροτρονPlu.Rom.11; . τὸ ῥῶ transpose it, Paus. 3.13.5:—so in Pass., A.D.Synt.8.20; of accent, to be shifted, Id.Adv. 189.26:—Med., “ὑπερθέσθαι τινὰ πέραν ποταμοῦPlb.21.39.9.
3. c. acc. loci, cross, pass over,τὸν ΤαῦρονStr.14.4.3:—Med., ὑπερθέσθαι τὴν ἄκραν double it, D.S.13.3: cf. “ὑπέρθεσις1.2.
b. shoot over,ταῖς βολαῖς τὸ τῆς φάλαγγος βάθοςAel.Tact.4.3.
4. Med., hold over, so as to protect, “παιδὸς ὑπὲρ χέρα θηκαμέναAP6.280.
II. metaph., παντὶ θεὸν αἴτιον ὑπερτιθέμεν set God over all as cause, Pi.P.5.25.
3. Med., set oneself above, surpass, exceed, excel, τινὰ ταῖς χορηγίαις, κατὰ τὴν ὠμότητα, Plb.2.63.3, 18.17.3; ἁτὸν ( = αὑτὸν)“ ἐν τῇ πρὸς τὸν δῆμον εὐεργεσίαIG12 (5).860.27 (Tenos, i B.C.), cf. 22.1304.19 (iii B.C.), OGI339.61 (Sestos, ii B. C.): abs., “. τῇ μεγαλοψυχίᾳIG22.1043.65; . τῇ φιλοπονίᾳ ib.12 (5).129.10, cf. 27 (Paros, ii B.C.):—Act., “ὑπερτ[ιθ]εὶς . . ἑατὸν τῇ πρὸς τὰ κοινὰ σπουδῇ καὶ φιλοτιμίᾳAth.Mitt.35.413 (= IGRom.4.293aii 3, Pergam., ii B.C.).
4. of Time, outlast, outlive,τὰ τετταράκοντα ἔτη σπανίως ὑπερτιθέασινStr.16.4.12, cf. Gal.19.565:—Med., μόνην τὴν νύκτα ὑπερθεμένη having let it pass, Hld.1.10.
5. Med. also, put off, defer, PEleph.11.5 (iii B.C.), etc.; “. τὴν ἐπανόρθωσιν ποιῆσαιEpict.Ench.51.1; “. τι εἰς τὴν ἐσομένην σύνοδονIG7.2711.49 (Acraeph., i A. D.); “εἰς ἄλλον καιρὸν ἐπιτηδειότερονPhld.Rh.1.212 S.; “τὴν ταχθεῖσαν ἡμέρανPlb.5.29.3, etc.: abs., delay, Id.4.30.2, etc.:—Pass., to be put off, Gp.2.49.1.
b. Med., omit,τὴν ῥαφὴν ὑπερθέμενοιPaul.Aeg.6.16.
6. Gramm., to be formed as a superlative,Δαναώτατος ὑπερτίθεταιA.D.Pron.64.12, cf. Adv.168.1.
