Aptĕra

Ἀπτέρα). A city of Crete about eighty stadia from Cydonia. Its name was said to be derived from the result of a contest in music held at this place between the Sirens and the Muses, when the former, being defeated, were so affected that their wings dropped from their shoulders (Steph. Byzant. s. v. Ἀπτέρα).
