Arbēla
(
τὰ Ἄρβηλα). A city of Adiabené in Assyria,
the headquarters of Darius Codomanus before the last battle in which he was overthrown by
Alexander (B.C. 331), which is hence frequently called the battle of Arbela, though it was
really fought near Gaugamela, about fifty miles west of Arbela.
