Egnatii

A Roman family of Samnitic origin.


1.

Gellius Egnatius. A leader of the Samnites in the Third Samnite War. He fell in battle against the Romans in B.C. 295.


2.

Marius Egnatius. A general of the Italian allies in the Social War, who was killed in battle, B.C. 89.


3.

M. Egnatius Rufus. A Roman of some note who was aedile in B.C. 20, and praetor in the following year. Having couspired against Augustus, he was put to death in B.C. 18.


4.

P. Egnatius Celer. A Stoic philosopher, the teacher of Barea Soranus (q.v.), who was the chief witness against his upright pupil when accused of treason under Nero. See Juv.iii. 116, with Mayor's note.
