Ennius

A grammarian of whose personality nothing is known, but who is mentioned by Suetonius as being probably the author of a work on letters, syllables, and metres, usually ascribed to the poet Ennius (Suet. Gram. 1). To him is perhaps to be credited the introduction of shorthand writing at Rome. See W. Deecke in the Rhein. Museum, xxxvi. 577; and the article Notae.
