Gaetulia
(
Γαιτουλία). The interior of Northern Africa, south of
Mauretania, Numidia, and the region bordering on the Syrtes, reaching to the Atlantic Ocean on
the west, and of very indefinite extent towards the east and south. The pure Gaetuli were not
an Aethiopic (i. e. Negro), but a Libyan race, and were most probably the ancestors of the
Berbers (Ritter,
Erdkunde, i. pp. 1034 foll.). Cossus Lentulus brought the
Gaetulians under Roman rule, receiving for this a triumph and the surname Gaetulicus.
