A Goth, the minister of the emperor Arcadius from 399 to 401. He succeeded the eunuch Eutropius, whose death he had contrived, and soon after revolted against the imperial authority, uniting his forces with those of his countryman Tribigild. He then received from the weak Arcadius the title of Commanding General of the Roman Armies, and practically became emperor, but was slain in a conflict with the Huns (A.D. 401).
