Ὑγίεια). In Greek mythology, the goddess of Health, daughter of Asclepius (Aesculapius), with whom she is often worshipped. In works of art she is represented by his side, as a maiden of kindly aspect, with a serpent to whom she is giving drink from a saucer. As the giver of mental health, she is sometimes confused with Athené Hygiea (Eumen. 522). By the Romans she was identified with Salus (q.v.).
