Ἑσπερία). The Western Land (from ἕσπερος, vesper), the name given by the Greek poets to Italy, because it lay west of Greece. In imitation of them, the Roman poets gave the name of Hesperia to Spain, which they sometimes called Ultima Hesperia (Hor. Carm. i. 36, which they occasionally called Hesperia Magna. See Italia.
