Hippocampus（ἱπποκάμπος). A fabulous animal, having the fore-quarters and body of a horse, but ending in the tail of a fish, like the following illustration, from a Pompeian painting, which the poets and artists of antiquity commonly attach to the marine car of Neptune and the Tritons.
