Massagĕtae

Μασσαγέται). A wild and warlike people of Central Asia, north of the Iaxartes (the Araxes of Herodotus) and the Sea of Aral, and on the peninsula between this lake and the Caspian. Herodotus appears to include under the name all the nomad tribes of Asia east of the Caspian. It was in an expedition against them that Cyrus the Great was defeated and slain. See Cyrus.
