Odenāthus

The ruler of Palmyra who checked the victorious career of the Persians after the defeat and capture of Valerian, A.D. 260 (Procop. Pers. ii. 5). In return for these services, Gallienus bestowed upon Odenathus the title of Augustus. He was soon afterwards murdered, and was succeeded by his wife Zenobia, A.D. 266. See Palmyra; Zenobia.
