Olympia
(
Ὀλυμπία). A small plain in Elis where the Olympian Games
were held. It was surrounded on the north by the hill Cronus or Cronius, on the south by the
river Alpheus, and on the west by the river Cladeus. Within its limits was the sacred
precinct of Zeus called
Ἄλτις (a dialectic form of
ἄλσος, “grove”). For particulars regarding the
