Proxĕnus

Πρόξενος). A Boeotian, the disciple of Gorgias, and friend of Xenophon. Being connected by the ties of hospitality with the younger Cyrus, the latter engaged him in his service. He was seized by Tissaphernes and put to death with the other Greek generals. It was at the invitation of Proxenus that Xenophon was induced to enter the service of Cyrus (Xen. Anab. i. 1, 11).
