Speculātor

A scout or spy, of whom a special division was attached to each legion in the Roman army ( Hist. i. 25). Under the Empire the speculatores were a body-guard or corps of adjutants attached to the person of the emperor ( Hist. ii. 73; Sueton. Calig. 44).
