Monoeci Portus
also
Herculis Monoeci Portus. The modern Monaco; a port-town on the
coast of Liguria, founded by the Massilians, was situated on a promontory (hence the
arx Monoeci of Vergil), and possessed a temple of Hercules Monoecus, from whom
the place derived its name (
Verg. Aen. vi.
801).
