CYLINDRUS

CYLINDRUS (κύλινδρος).

1. A roller, used in agriculture for levelling and consolidating the ground. (Cat. Agr. 1.129; Col. 11.3.34; Verg. G. 1.178 ; Plin. Nat. 19.158; Vitr. 10.6.)

2. A precious stone cut or ground in a cylindrical form (Juv. 2.61 ; Plin. Nat. 37. § § 78, 113; Dig. 34, 2, 32.9), frequently mentioned in inscriptions (quoted by Marquardt, Privatl. d. Römer, p. 682).
