CASTRENSES a name applied under the early empire to the ministri of the emperor, whose residence was often spoken of as castra or praetorium, in reference to his position as commander-in-chief. The whole of his servants formed the familia castrensis, and were under the orders of a procurator castrensis, an officer mentioned in inscriptions between the times of Claudius and of Commodus: e. g. Wilmanns, Exemp. Inscr. Lat. No. 1243.
