COCHLIS
COCHLIS (
κοχλίς) is an adjective
used with
columna by P. Victor (
Reg.
Urb. Rom. viii. and ix.) to denote such columns as the Trajan
and Antonine [
COLUMNA],
probably on account of the spiral staircase (
κοχλίας:
COCLEA No.
4) with-in the column, rather than the spiral bas-relief on the outside, as
he carefully gives the number of steps in each staircase.
