LIBRA the unit of weight among the Romans and Italians. The libra or pound of copper was also the unit of value, and was called As (q. v.). The weight of the libra has been fixed by metrologists as 5050 grains (327.5 grammes), nearly 12 ounces avoirdupois. It was divided into twelve unciae or ounces.
