PEDI´SEQUI a class of slaves, whose duty was to follow their master when he went out of his house, while the anteambulo preceded him. The pedisequi seem to have formed a special class of slaves, which was almost the lowest of all (Nep. Attic. 13; Plaut. Mil. Glor. 4.2, 18; Ter. Andr. 1.1, 96; Cic. Att. 2.1. 6). There was a similar class of female slaves, called pedisequae (Plaut. Asin. 1.3, 31). Several inscriptions bearing on this point are cited in Marquardt, Privatleben, p. 148; compare Becker-Göll, Gallus, 2.154.
