AR´CULUM a kind of porter's knot or pad for carrying
burdens, for which the usual Latin word is
CESTICILLUS The latter word seems to have been
appropriated to secular,
arculum to sacred uses
(P. Diac.
s. vv. pp. 14, 35, Müll.).

The illustration is from a terra-cotta figure discovered by Mr. Newton at
Halicarnassus, and now in the British Museum. It represents a Canephoros
carrying a sacred vessel on her head by the aid of a pad, which must have.
corresponded to the Roman arculum.
