DUPLA´RII

DUPLA´RII or DUPLICA´RII were soldiers who received on account of their good conduct double allowance (duplicia cibaria), and perhaps in some cases double pay likewise. (Varr. L. L. 5.90; Liv. 2.59, 24.47; Orelli, Inscrip. No. 3535.) The forms occurring are duplicarius (Or. 3533, 4994), dupliciarius (ib. 3534), duplaris (Veget. 2.7), duplarius (Or. 3531, 3535, &c.). The title appears so often in inscriptions together with that of Augustalis, that Henzen holds that the duplarii were a division of the Augustales (Bull. dell' Inst. Rom. 1848, 57); but Sellitto points out that in some inscriptions words intervening between the two titles betoken a distinction between them, e.g. Augustali) gratis creato Dupliciario. (Bull. Arch. Napol. 1857, p. 24.)
