ARIACA

ARIACA (Ἀριακὴ Σαδινῶν), a considerable district of India intra Gangem, along the W. coast of the peninsula, corresponding apparently to the N. part of the presidency of Bombay. Ptolemy mentions in it two rivers, Goaris (Γοάρις) and Benda (Βήνδα), and several cities, the chief of which seem to have been Hippocura (Ἱππόκουπα) in the S. (Bangalore, or Hydrabad), and Baetana (Βαίτανα, prob. Beder) in the N., besides the poet of Simylla. (Ptol. 7.1. § § 6, 82; Peripl. p. 30.)
