CARMEL

CARMEL a city of Judah, mentioned between Maon and Ziph, in Joshua (15.55), the same that occurs with Maon in the history of David. (1 Sam. 25.2.) The three sites retain their ancient names, and are found two or three hours south of Hebron Kurmel lying between the other two 1 1/4 hour distant from Zîf, and only half an hour from Máîn. The ruins of Kurmel are very extensive. (Robinson, Bib. Res. vol. ii. pp. 196--200.)
