MAXILU´A

MAXILU´A (Μαξιλοῦα, Ptol. 2.4.13), a town in Hispania Baetica, which, like Calentum, was celebrated for its manufacture of a sort of bricks light enough to swim on water. (Plin. Nat. 35.14. s. 49; comp. Strab. xiii. p.615; Vitr. 2.3; Schneider, ad Ecl. Phys. p. 88.) It was probably situated in the Sierra Morena. (Florez, Esp. Sagr. xii. p. 259.)
