SUASTE´NE (Σουαστήνη, Ptol. 7.1.42), a district in the NW. of India, beyond the Panjáb, and above the junction of the Kabúl river and the Indus. It derives its name from the small river Suastus (the Suvastú or Suwad), which is one of the tributaries of the Kabúl river. [GORYA]
