VORDENSES

Eth. VORDENSES in Gallia Narbonensis, an ethnic name which occurs in an inscription found at Apt, the site of Apta Julia [APTA JULIA]. The inscription states that the “Vordenses pagani” dedicate this monument to their patronus, who is designated “IIII vir” of the Colonia Apta. The place is supposed to be Gordes, which is contiguous to the diocese of Apt, and in that of Cavaillon. The change of Vord into Gord is easily explained. [VAPINCUM] (D'Anville, Notice, &c).
