[*] 660. Φθάνω in the leading sentence may emphasise a following πρίν. E.g. Ἔφθην αἰνήσας πρίν σου κατὰ πάντα δαῆναι ἤθεα. THEOG. 969 (see 887). So Il. xvi. 322, ἔφθη ὀρέξάμενος πρὶν οὐτάσαι. Ἔφθησαν ἀπικόμενοι πρὶν ἢ τοὺς βαρβάρους ἥκειν, “they arrived before the barbarians came.” HDT. vi. 116: so ix. 70. Φθήσονται πλεύσαντες πρὶν Χίους αἰσθέσθαι. THUC. viii. 12. Φθῆναι συμβαλόντες πρὶν ἐλθεῖν τοὺς βοηθήσοντας, “to join battle before the auxiliaries should come up.” ISOC. iv. 87.
