[667] θῶκον λάινον: in the earliest days the agora was surrounded with large stones sunk into the earth (Od. 6. 267). These solid stone seats (ξεστοὶ λίθοι, Od. 8. 6, Il. 18. 504) were occupied by the chieftains in their deliberations.
