[532] πέρην: i.e. the opposite (Asiatic) coast, distant about 4 stades. They had anchored on the Thracian shore where the Bosporus joins the Euxine, 176 supr. The sailing across is not mentioned, but πέρην implies it. This is Buttmann's view (Lexil. 91), and it is the most probable one. de M. explains, "au delà de la demeure de Phinée, plus près de la mer, d'où il pourra être aperçu par les navigateurs," but πέρην could hardly have this meaning. Brunck held that πέρην must mean πέλας, or else must be changed to πάρος or πέλας.
