[231] 'unless they shall bring back to him the maiden captured forthwith, either on land, or discovering the vessel while yet in the waves of the open Euxine, and unless he shall satisfy to the full his soul's eager craving for vengeance, on their own heads shall it be, and they shall learn by suffering the measure of his wrath and of the blow which he had felt.'
αὐτάγρετον: on Od. 16. 148 the grammarians give a double interpretation of αὐτάγρετα, (1) αὐθαίρετα, （2） πάραυτα ἀγρευόμενα. The former of these meanings we have had in 2. 326, the latter seems to be the meaning here, though we might also render 'captured by their own hands.'This text is part of:
