[282] ὕπατον κέρας Ὠκεανοῖο: 'the northernmost branch of Ocean'; see note to 1.222. In Hes. Th. 789 the Styx is described as Ὠκεανοῖο κέρας. Every river could be called a branch, ἀπορρώξ, of Ocean, the great river encompassing the earth, the parent of all other rivers, fountains, etc.
