νέκταρ , αρος: nectar, the drink of the gods, as ambrosia is their food, Il. 1.598, Il. 4.3, applied as a preservative against decay, Il. 19.38. Why the lexicons say that νέκταρ means wine when the Cyclops speak of a ‘sample of nectar and ambrosia,’ we do not know, Od. 9.359.
