in volucres abiere, ‘passed to birds,’ became birds, a use fully illustrated in the lexicons. So redire in is used of a metamorphosis reversed, as in XIV. 766, IV. 231, “in veram rediit faciem solitumque nitorem”, IX. 431 (of becoming young again), Iolaus in annos quos egit rediit.
