esse, ratos. With this punctuation victos esse and dempsisse are coordinate. All recent editors, except Ehwald, by removing the comma connect esse with ratos, which seems preferable, victos being then subordinate: it was greed that made the crew think the bag contained gold and open it. For ratos aurum Ehwald compares VIII. 251, IX. 706, Virg. Aen.V. 40.
