ἐθαύμαζε εἰ: the prot. with εἰ, after verbs expressing emotion in past time, is equivalent to a causal clause, and might take the optative. GMT. 697; H. 926. εἰ μή is equivalent to ὅτι οὐ.

ἐστίν, ἐστίν: such repetitions are frequent in Xenophon. So δοκεῖν εἶναι, εἶναι δοκεῖν in 14.

τοὺς μέγιστον φρονοῦντας: those who most pride themselves. μέγιστον, instead of μέγιστα, on the analogy of μέγα φρονεῖν.

οὐ ταὐτὰ δοξάζειν: do not hold the same opinions. For the inf. in subord. clause of indirect discourse, see on εἶναι in 8.

ἀλλήλοις: for the abridged expression, see on τῶν ἄλλων 3.

τοῖς μαινομένοις: madmen, as a class. For the generic use of the art., see G. 950; H. 659.

διακεῖσθαι πρὸς ἀλλήλους: are affected, in comparison with one another.
