ἔλεγε: he used to remark.

τὸ εὐωχεῖσθαι: the phrasegood cheer.’ For the neut. art. before any word or expression made the obj. of thought, see G. 955, 2; H. 125 e.

καλοῖτο: signified.

τὸεὖ: the adverb εὖ.

ἐπὶ τῷ ἐσθίειν: “to express the eating.”

ἀνετίθει: he used to apply. ‘Good cheer’ comes only when we eat wholesome viands and in moderation.
