τί δήποτε: see on τίσι ποτέ i. 1. 1.—ἀμφότερον κτλ.: Hom. Γ 179. For the gender, see on χρησιμώτερον ii. 3. 1. Plutarch tells us that this was the favorite verse of Alexander the Great, who always carried a copy of the Iliad with him on his campaigns.

ἆρά γε: sc. ἐπῄνεσεν αὐτόν.

οὐκ εἰ: not in case that.

καὶ βασιλεὺς ἀγαθός: i.e. καὶ ὅτι βασιλεὺς ἀγαθὸς ἂν εἴη.

προεστήκοι: should conduct.
