στρατηγόν: is not redundant, but refers with emphasis to τὸν στρατηγοῦντα.

κάλλιον, αἴσχιον: const. with ἄλλο, the obj. of εὑρεῖν.

τὰ μὲν ἄλλα περιῄρει κτλ.: “dismissing consideration of all other qualities, he emphasized only this, that a general must provide for the welfare of those under him.” On περιῄρει, κατέλιπε, cf. τῶν πολεμικῶν περιελὼν καὶ τὸ τόξῳ μελετᾶν καὶ ἀκοντίῳ κατέλιπε τοῦτο μόνον αὐτοῖς τὸ σὺν μαχαίρᾳ μάχεσθαι Cyr. ii. 1. 21.
