ἐπεὶ...γε introduces a confirmation of the explanation just given of the present weakness of Greece in the denial of an alternative explanation. χρημάτων may be taken with πλῆθος or with ἀφθονία. The former seems better, as ‘men’ and ‘money’ are frequently coupled in such a connexion, and σώματα and χρήματα are words of the same formation. οἷς, with κρίνοι rather than with ἰσχύειν. τῶν τότε, for ἢ τοῖς τότε. ἄχρηστα κ.τ.ἑ. For the asyndeton cf. Phil. 1. 36. ὑπὸ because γίγνεται (as commonly) is practically the passive of ποιεῖν.
