The dependent optative is found in indirect questions, in the secondary sequence. E. g.

κλήρους ... πάλλον
ὁππότερος δὴ πρόσθεν ἀφείη χάλκεον ἔγχος

‘they shook lots [to see] which of the two should first hurl his bronze spear’; here “ἀφείη” represents a deliberative subjunctive of the direct question, “ἀφήῃ” (Attic “ἀφῇ”).
